Don’t Delete Your Less Than Best Photos – Get Creative!

I am sure I am not alone in wishing that my keeper (technically and compositionally correct images) rate was higher. With digital photography we push the boundaries of what is possible and sometimes our expectations are unrealistic. However, not all is lost as even the most unremarkable image can be given a new lease of life if we just think creatively.

Not Amused
Here is an image of my daughter who was getting rather annoyed with me taking lots of images of her as I had a new lens to try out. I aptly named this image “Not Amused”. It was one of my Picks of the images that I took of her as it was technically and compositionally correct. However, it didn't quite sit right with me and therefore did not make it to my portfolio.

I came back to the image a few weeks later and decided to see if I could make it any better. To do this I had to work out what I didn't like about it. The main subject was my daughter yet the background colours and also the facial colouring were distracting. OK, that was easy to sort as i converted it to Black and White. It still didn't quite work, and the reason was symmetry. I tried cropping this way and that and eventually settled on a square crop. Having got the crop right and converted to Black and White, I decided that it would suit a high key effect, so played with Exposure, Contrast and Point Curve adjustments until I had it right. A touch of post capture and selective sharpening and a feathered white Post-Crop Vignette and it was good to go. Below is the final image and just goes to show that there are gems of images within all our collections.

High Key Portrait
I would be interested to hear your comments on the above and also any examples of this type of editing you may have done.
